The 2017 Ford F-150 receives a comprehensive mechanical refresh and one new model, the hotly anticipated F-150 Raptor. Ford’s street-legal desert truck continues the Raptor’s reputation for world-beating off-road prowess, including all-new Fox internal-bypass shocks front and rear, nearly two additional inches of suspension travel compared to the previous Raptor, and a high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 that Ford promises will make more torque than the previous Raptor’s thirsty 6.2-liter V-8.

2017 Ford F150 Fx4 Review

The Raptor’s engine changes are shared with the rest of the 2017 Ford F-150 lineup. Output for the new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 is rated at 375 hp and an amazing 470 lb-ft of torque, up from 365 ponies and 420 lb-ft for the previous-generation engine. Mated to the engine will be Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission (shared with the Raptor).

The 10-speed transmission is built using a variety of advanced alloys, permitting lighter weight, greater operating efficiency, and increased performance. Three overdrive gears and a bigger ratio spread mean it will be easy to keep the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine (which gets exclusive rights the 10-speed transmission, at least for now) performing in its optimal rev range.

Vehicle Summary

2017 Ford F150 Fx4 Review

The 2017 Ford F-150 is a fullsize 1/2-ton truck and the segment’s perennial bestseller, claiming the title of the U.S.’ bestselling vehicle since 1981. It competes directly with its cross-town rivals, the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Sierra 1500, as well as foes from Toyota (Tundra) and Nissan (Titan). It is available in a variety of body configurations: Regular cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew; with 5.5-, 6.5-, and 8-foot beds.

Overview

The 2017 Ford F-150 runs the pickup-truck gamut, available in everything from the utilitarian XL trim to a luxurious, Mercedes-rivaling Limited. All-aluminum bodywork overlies a high-strength steel frame, giving the F-150 some of the most futuristic, advanced construction of any vehicle this side of an exotic sports car. Ford’s other unconventional choices for the light-duty F-Series include a lineup of turbocharged V-6 engines displacing 2.7 and 3.5 liters, giving the 2017 F-150 surprising performance cred without sacrificing efficiency. And that lightweight bodywork means weight can be redistributed toward hauling, giving the truck the highest payload and towing ratings of any 1/2-ton pickup.

Safety

A platform that was new for 2015 means the F-150 has the modern, high-tech bandwidth needed for almost every safety feature imaginable. In addition to the predictable barrage of anti-lock brakes, traction control, rollover prevention software, and trailer sway control, the F-150’s available Forward Collision Warning can help prevent accidents before they happen. In the event of a collision, however, the F-150 should have its occupants covered, thanks to its five-star safety ratings from the NHTSA, as well as Top Safety Pick status from the IIHS. Bolstering what is already a robust frame and platform, the F-150 comes standard with driver and passenger front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags, and seatbelt pretensioners. Furthermore, SuperCrew models can be equipped inflatable second-row seatbelts, which help distribute the forces of a collision more evenly across the occupant’s chest to reduce injuries.

Trims, Packages, and What’s Standard

A key to Ford’s best-seller status is the wide variety of trim levels and body configurations available for the 2017 F-150. A base-model XL is Ford’s fleet seller, while its volume truck is the one-step-up XLT, which includes Ford’s SYNC infotainment system, nicer interior materials, foglamps, and a few other creature comforts. The 2017 F-150 Lariat is the first step into Ford’s burgeoning luxury-truck lineup, with standard leather, dual-zone automatic climate control, power seats with memory, and many other features. Next in the lineup is the SuperCrew-only King Ranch, which features LED head- and taillights as standard, in addition to special saddle-toned Mesa leather, reverse sensors, a 110-volt power inverter, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and more.

A Platinum trim level adds nicer interior materials, multi-contour massaging seats, satin exterior chrome, power running boards, and more, while the top-spec Limited gets adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree multi-camera parking system, and a massive two-panel moonroof to the list of standard equipment. Many of the features that come standard on the more luxurious trim levels are available on lower-spec trucks, so building the perfect 2017 Ford F-150 from an a la carte options list is possible. Additionally, three cabs and three bed lengths provide maximum utility, maximum maneuverability, maximum interior space, or a middle ground between the three.

What We Think

The Ford F-150 was a fierce competitor in Motor Trend’s 2015 Truck of the Year competition, and it won our sister title Truck Trend’s award for the 2015 Pickup Truck of the Year. We’re duly impressed by the truck’s performance when hauling, particularly when equipped with the sporty 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, although the truck’s light weight can work against it when towing a heavy trailer. Even so, with a massive list of available features and a smooth, luxurious ride, the F-150 proves it can pull double duty as both a workhorse and a daily driver or family vehicle.

Cool Fact

The Ford F-Series has been America’s bestselling vehicle since 1981, and the 2017 Ford F-150 should help continue that streak.
